Case Study Small Accountants

Small Accounts Firm
We had designed and deployed a Citrix XenApp solution for a London based accountancy firm of 20+ users three years previously. Citrix XenApp was the clients default and preferred application delivery platform.
There were several areas of concern that the client wanted addressing in particular the current state of the platform, identify any potential issues, and ensure the platform was optimised for performance.
The health check revealed that, overall, the Citrix farm was in relatively good health. However, the number of overall virtual machines had increased since the solution was first deployed. All hosts were now running at near capacity for both local storage and memory.
The client’s infrastructure had been built over time, with HP servers purchased in stages. This led to different memory and storage configurations across the three hypervisor hosts. While this approach worked initially, it became clear that this inconsistency was now affecting overall performance, scalability and high availability.
To address this challenge, we recommended standardizing the local storage and memory configurations across all three hosts. This involved:
Memory: Increasing the memory on each host.
Storage: Equipping each server with additional enterprise-grade SAS 15K HDD and SSD drives to increase storage capacity and the SSD’s to ensure faster storage performance.
Tiered storage: Implementing tiered local storage, which allowed us to move more performance intensive workloads like Citrix VDAs, Exchange, and SQL Server onto the SSD volumes.

This approach not only balanced the resources across the hosts but also significantly improved the overall performance of the system. By providing dedicated high-speed storage for intensive applications, we were able to reduce latency and optimize system efficiency. With the increased additional local hard drive storage capacity we were able to improve the platforms resilience by implementing Hyper V replication of VMs.
These changes helped extend the life of the client’s production hypervisor pool for several years. By providing the necessary upgrades and optimizations, we helped the client achieve a more stable, highly available and scalable environment.
The performance improvements were immediately noticeable. With critical workloads now running on high-performance SSDs, users experienced smoother performance across applications, and the entire system was more responsive.
As the client continues to grow its business we helped ensure that it has a robust virtualisation platform with sufficient capacity and performance to continue supporting their needs.
